Buriram Unitrd suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of FC Seoul in the Champions League as Brazilian Adriano hit them with a four goal salvo. He was helped in no small way by shambolic defending as the Koreans ran riot in the second half.

Buriram United started brightly and were the better side. However, one incident in the twelfth minute changed the game completely. Diogo was clear on goal as he got goal-side of Osmar chasing a through ball but was felled from behind by the Spaniard in the area. It was a clear penalty and a red card but the referee saw nothing amiss.

To make matters worse Diogo was carried off on a stretcher with what seems like an injury to his left arm and you could see the despair in the Buriram United players’ eyes as he left the field. Buriram United brought on Adul which left Kaio to plough a lonely furrow up front, which he did manfully for the full ninety minutes.

Buriram United continued to take the game to the Koreans and were playing some good football without creating any clear chances. It all changed after twenty-seven minutes when Seoul took the lead. Dreadful marking allowed Adriano to run onto a diagonal through ball down the left and advance into the box before drilling a low, right-foot shot into the net.

Siwarak was left completely exposed, though he will be disappointed not to have made the save. Seoul visibly grew in confidence and began to put pressure on Buriram United  who were relying on hitting long balls into Kaio , which was their only attacking outlet for the whole of the game.

It got worse for Buriram United six minutes before half-time when Adriano repeated the dose as two Buriram defenders were guilty of ball-watching allowing him a free run to lift the ball over Siwarak.Realistically, it was game over,as it was to prove.

Just before the interval Suchao played Kaio in with a lovely ball but he got himself in a tangle and the chance was gone. To say Buriram United were up against it would be an understatement but few could foresee the carnage that was to follow.

Buriram United replaced Anawin with Suree for the second-half but the home side found themselves three down four minutes into the half.Yet again the Buriram United defence were caught square and outnumbered as Adriano was in acres of space down the left and he hammered an unstoppable shot into the net.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, it did as Buriram United were reduced to ten men when Suchao was shown a straight red for a tackle that quite frankly could’ve broken the Seoul player’s leg.

Shortly after it was four when Buriram United failed to clear their lines and Adriano did the rest. Buriram United were by now totally demoralized as the visitors toyed with them and it came as no surprise when Tunez was beaten for pace and the ball was played across goal for an easy finish at the far post.

Still Buriram United had not had a serious effort on goal, though a long ball finally did get Kaio clear in the eightieth minute but he was brought down just outside the box. Theerathon’s free-kick summed up Buriram’s night as it sailed high over the bar.

There was still time for Seoul to add a sixth before the referee finally ended Buriram United’s misery with the final whistle. There is no easy way to take this as Buriram United were clinically put to the sword. They have to learn from this and move on.

But what are the lessons to be learned ? Firstly, it is patently obvious that without Diogo Buriram United are predictable up front. There is no Macena to provide the tireless running and variety that was the feature of last season.

Secondly, playing three at the back is always a risk against quality players like Adriano. For four of the goals Buriram United were caught square and good though Tunez is, he is not exactly lightning quick.

In my opinion, they need the luxury of a covering defender. Undoubtedly, Seoul are a very good side and Buriram United are probably in for some more testing nights in what is arguably the toughest group.

There is no doubt that the Diogo incident changed the game. Had Buriram United gone one up and Seoul been reduced to ten men I doubt that the game would have evolved like it did. However, the fact remains that Buriram United showed little sign of troubling the Seoul defence once they had lost their main man.

Also, the ease with which Seoul carved open the Buriram United defence is a major concern and must be addressed. On a positive note, Adul and Kaio deserve special mention for their non-stop effort in difficult circumstances.
