Four Buriram golfers travelled up to Khon Kaen on Tuesday to play Ubol Ratana Dam and Dancoon golf courses. Colin Bradwell, Keith Wood, Patrik Hukkelberg and Graham Dresser drove up to be joined by Colin’s close friend John and Patrik’s fellow Norwegian Oscar for two rounds at the afore-mentioned courses.
First off was the beautiful Ubol Ratana Dam course. I have not played a lot of courses in Thailand but this is certainly the best I have played. It’s like being at a top quality parkland course in England with all the holes tree-lined and quite a few with water, so beware !
It was in superb condition with lush fairways and manicured ,receptive greens. It is well-laid out and playable for golfers of all standards. If you did stray, you still have the opportunity to “take your medicine” and play your way back on track.
It is a joy to be simply on the course, even if you are not at the top of your game. There is nothing bad to say about this course and on Tuesday we paid the ridiculously low price of 600 bht with 300 caddy tip. A MUST play course.
We stayed at the Boss Grand Tower hotel, 150 yards from the Khon Kaen night life. The rooms are modern, spacious and very comfortable. All for the crazy price of 400 bht per room. Highly recommended.
The “local farang’ were VERY welcoming and got the evening off to a lively start. Suffice it to say that everyone slept VERY well. Eventually !
We then set off for Dancoon the following morning and we were all a little worse for wear. This is another good course, more open than the Dam but still well worth playing. Fairways and fast greens were in very good condition. Once again the cost was surprisingly cheap at 500bht plus 300 caddy tip. The bonus here is you can play all day once you have paid.
The standard of golf was not exactly exceptional but we can put that down to the Khon Kaen hospitality! All in all, a great couple of days. We WILL be back next month !!
