The sixth darts match between darts enthusiasts in Buriram and Ryan’s Resort (between Surin and Prasat) was held at Paddy’s Irish Bar and Outback Grill in Buriram on Thursday February 25. It was vital that Buriram put in a good performance as they were trailing 4-1 in the series.
The Ryan’s boys were a little down in numbers so two of the home players sportingly agreed to play for them to bring the teams up to 9-a-side.It was to be the usual format of 9 singles matches, 4 doubles, a match between the two captains and a team game. All games were 501 apart from the team game which was 1,001.
That meant there were 14 matches, with 8 being the magic number needed to claim victory. Ryan’s made their usual good start and won the opening game but Buriram levelled and then took a 2-1 lead. Back came Ryan’s to square the match before Buriram pulled away to take a 6-2 lead.
Ryan’s pulled one back to leave the score at 6-3 to Buriram after the singles. It has to be said that most games were close and could’ve gone either way. The players then took a break to enjoy a fantastic selection of barbecued pork, chicken and sausages which everyone agreed was excellent “tucker” . Many thanks to landlord Rod Young and his staff.
The match resumed with the doubles and Buriram won the first two, ensuring victory on the day. Ryan’s pulled one back but Buriram won the final doubles match, along with the team and captains’ matches to come out with a “remarkable” 11-4 victory. Yes, we all play to win but the camaraderie between the two teams ensures everyone has a great time, win or lose.
I think it is safe to say that the Buriram team did captain Peter Dempsey proud !! He was a very happy man as he thanked the Ryan’s team for their company and sportsmanship. He also announced that Buriram Car Hire had sponsored the cost of the Ryan’s team’s food.
He thanked Rod and his staff for the refreshments and then went on to talk a little about the lady who cooks the food at the Irish Bar. She is affectionately known as ” Cookie” and is a lovely lady. Sadly, she has been diagnosed with a very serious kidney condition, the one that former All-Black Jonah Lomu succumbed to. Her treatment is very expensive and landlord Rod has set up a “Cookie jar” so anyone who wishes to, can make a donation to help her. The jar is situated under the tv facing you when you enter the bar.
To help things along, Rod donated all the money from the food and all the Ryan’s boys kindly chipped in also. It is well to remember to be grateful for good health. We all wish Cookie all the best and she knows she has the support of everyone who knows her.
Finally, Ryan’s captain Colin Bradwell thanked and congratulated the Buriram team and he is looking forward to locking horns again at Ryan’s Resort in the not too distant future. He also echoed Peter’s comments about the food and Rod and his staff. After a few more beers the visitors boarded Ryan’s owner Gary’s new toy (a minibus) and set off home after another wonderful??!! exhibition of darts !
