Candles not fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is moving ahead with plans for a mass candlelight vigil for New Year’s Eve. They do not want the normal fireworks celebration to occur this year.

The change in policy follows the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Previous years’ fireworks have been used after the countdown for the New Year’s Eve celebrations but this year it is proposed that candles will be used to usher in 2017 as it will be more respectful.

Tourism Authority of Thailand director Yuthasak Suphasorn confirmed that he had instructed his deputy to contact business owners to find a way to make the celebration work.

He said it was necessary to get this sorted as soon as possible as tour companies needed to make plans well in advance.

All areas of the capital in Bangkok are expected to comply and tourist destinations should follow suit along with upcountry celebrations in Chiang Mai and other North- East destinations.

TAT is liaising with all tourist hot spots to put the plans in place.
