Ever heard of the Maths and Science Olympics ? Well,Thai students have won a total of 33 medals at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools (IMSO) 2016.
The contest, held in Indonesia’s Tangerang city from Nov 8-13, had more than 373 competitors from 22 countries — Brunei, China, Bulgaria, Hong Kong of China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakstan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand and Vietnam.
All participants were Grade 5 and 6 students, under the age of 13.
The Thai team was chosen by the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) from students across the country.
The team won a total of 12 medals in mathematics, five gold and seven silver. They also had the highest scores overall in the competition.
In addition, in the science competition, Thai pupils won 11 gold, 9 silver and one bronze medals.
This comes as a welcome boost to Thai education following recent concerns over the standard of science and maths results. OBEC have reaffirmed their intention to support Thai students in global competitions in the future.
