A European man who was hospitalised after claiming he had been robbed, drugged and was suffering from severe memory loss has been found to be a wanted fraudster and thief.
Dariusz Pieprzyca was arrested at his hospital bed by Thai police on Sunday and is currently behind bars.
Last Friday Pieprzyca was the subject of an online appeal launched by a good-natured Facebook user who thought he was helping a man in need.
The post (shown below), which was shared more than 6,000 times, was seeking help in identifying a Western man who claimed to be suffering from memory loss.
“This gentleman is presently at the Cambodia and Thailand border. He was approached by border police. They questioned him and quickly realised he was ill. They then took him to the hospital”, the post read.
“He unfortunately has lost his memory. He has no recollection of his name or country of residence. He has been robbed, so there is no identification on him at all. Please, we ask people to share this post.
“We have to try all countries as he seems to have a European accent. We think he is European but I’m not sure. so this needs this to go far and wide. It is very important we try to locate his family urgently. He is very distressed but safe in the hospital. Also, he has a very distinctive tattoo on his right arm. If anyone has any information they could help us with, please contact me. Thank you for your help.”
However, eagle eyed Facebook users discovered that the man who was in a hospital in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo was actually Dariusz Pieprzyca from Poland who is wanted in Thailand and his homeland for charges of theft and fraud.
Pieprzyca, who had also spent time in Cambodia had been on the run since 2016 and is alleged to have stolen more than $5,000 from people in Thailand and Poland.
He may have recently been working as a teacher in Udon Thani, it has been claimed.
An update to the Facebook appeal posted on Sunday evening read:
“Hi, just a quick update. The man I had previously made a post about claiming to have been drugged, robbed and suffering memory loss turned out to be a known con man and criminal with previous records.
“He has now been arrested by local police and is being held in custody. Thanks for all those that were willing to help and that were concerned. We much appreciate your help…..”
A photo of Pieprzyca in custody was also posted.
This isn’t the first time that Pieprzyca, who has a distinctive tattoo on his forearm, had been the subject of an online appeal after claiming to be suffering from memory loss.
Last month, a post was shared on Facebook about a man who claimed he had lost his memory in Hanoi. Pictures shared in the post now reveal that it was also Pieprzyca.
