As Thailand’s King Bhumipol this week celebrated ascending to the throne some 70 years ago, and Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth celebrates her 90th birthday this year, we take a trip down memory lane and share some special images with our readers.
In February 1972 Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Phillip arrived in Bangkok at the beginning of a six day visit to Thailand. It was the first time a reigning British monarch had visited Thailand.
The Queen and Duke were greeted by King Bhumipol and Queen Sirikit, and were entertained on their first day with displays of Thai dancing, before attending a glittering banquet.
It is also worth remembering that our very much respected King Bhumipol is the longest reigning monarch in the world and Queen Elizabeth is the longest ever reigning monarch in Great Britain.
Special thanks to David Travis for providing the images.
